Zane Schweitzer impressed as qualification took place for tomorrow's finals ©ISA

Competitors battled with challenging conditions as the International Surfing Association (ISA) World Stand Up Paddle (SUP) and Paddleboard Championship continued in north-west Denmark.

SUP action was the focus of the day, with suffers vying to secure spots in tomorrow’s finals.

Zane Schweitzer was among those to impress in the men’s competition in Vorupør, a location which has been dubbed “Cold Hawaii”.

Schweitzer, who is from Hawaii, achieved a score of 14.70 points to progress to the final of the men’s event.

He reflected that the conditions, which led to the format becoming a single elimination session due to the small window of waves, gave him a greater respect to the local surfers.

"Being here in 'Cold Hawaii' has given me so much respect for the local surfers," he said.

"Casper Steinfath grew up here and became a world-class athlete in these challenging conditions.

"I have a new-found appreciation for his dedication and all who get in the water here."

Brazil’s Caio Vaz and France’s Benoit Carpentier were also among those to progress to tomorrow’s action, the former having achieved the day’s second highest heat total of 14.50 points.

Carpentier managed to score the highest single wave, as he was awarded 8.17 points.

Defending women’s champion Shakira Westdorp eased through with the Australian achieving a score of 12.83 points.

The first round of the women’s competition is due to continue tomorrow.

"The conditions were challenging today but the world’s best SUP surfers showed why they are the best, able to perform at a high level no matter what the conditions are like," said Fernando Aguerre, ISA President.

"Tomorrow we’ll see SUP surfing world champions crowned, the first ever in Europe.

"Vorupør has been amazing thus far, this is as remote and colourful of a town that you can find.

"The people, the culture, and the unity of the international athletes are creating an incredible atmosphere that can only be found at ISA World Championships."
