An elite level cross-country skiing competition has been held alongside a mass participation race as part of the Southern Hemisphere’s largest annual snowsports event in Falls Creek in Australia.

The event, called the "Kangaroo Hoppet", combines top-level sporting competition and great family fun, according to organisers.

It featured races for a variety of age groups, as well as an event for elite skiers.

This year's edition of the men's elite race was won by Miles Havlick of the United States, with Australian Sochi 2014 Olympian Phillip Bellingham second and Valerio Leccardi of Switzerland third.

Slovenian-born Barbara Jezersek, who has been competing for Australia since last year, took the women's honours.

Mary Rose of the US came second and France's Iris Pessey was third.

The elite skiers race over 42 kilometres, which can also be attempted by those in the mass participation event.

There was also a competition over 21km and a 7km event for all ages and abilities, called the "Joey Hoppet".

Scholarships worth AUD$500 (£307/$398/€332) were awarded to the first male and female in the under-18 and under-14 categories, as well as in the 7km Joey Hoppet.

The first skier to cross the line in the 21km who is under-23  and the first Australians in the 42km main event are also given the AGL Energy in Action scholarships.

"Being part of the Worldloppet series of 20 cross-country ski races, the Kangaroo Hoppet attracts an increasing number of overseas skiers wanting to do something they love, in a new and different alpine landscape," race director Ben Derrick said.

"What better way to see the world on skis and be welcomed in an atmosphere of personal challenge, family fun and camaraderie.

"It’s about making lifetime friends doing a great lifestyle sport."
