The 2016 total was just under €20 million (£18.5 million/$24 million).

This compares with €10.3 million (£9.5 million/$12.3 million) for the prior Summer Paralympic Games year of 2012 and €6.4 million (£5.9 million/$7.6 million) for 2008, year of the Beijing Paralympics.

The figures are contained in the recently-published 2016 IPC annual report.

Paralympic Games marketing and broadcasting fees accounted for €5.1 million (£4.7 million/$6.1 million), or more than a quarter of the most recent total, with sponsorship and fundraising accounting for a further €4.2 million (£3.9 million/$5 million).

World Para Sports revenue contributed a further close to €2.5 million (£2.3 million/$3 million).

However, this was well down on the previous year’s total of just over €5 million (£4.6 million/$6 million).

This was because fewer competitions were organised by World Para Sports in 2016, owing to Rio 2016.

The IPC said that specific activities related to the Paralympic Games generated revenue of more than €4.1 million (£3.8 million/$4.9 million).

Remaining income came from grants, special project fees, membership fees and other sources.

The Bonn-based body allocated more than €3 million (£2.8 million/$3.6 million) to reserves, approximately one-third earmarked and two-thirds unrestricted.

The figures were also said to have been impacted by the "favourable evolution" of the euro/US dollar exchange rate.
