Costa Rica’s men’s team’s Americas Cup debut ended in a 72-37 defeat to an experienced Venezuela side in Group A.

The match preceded Colombia’s Group B encounter with Uruguay as the hosts triumphed 60-47.

Nelson Jaime Sanz Londoño was Colombia’s top scorer with 24 points and 13 rebounds, while Uruguay had three players in double figures with Fernando Polti, Diego Roldan Alvarado and Daniel Martinez bagging 16, 15 and 12 points respectively.

The top four men’s teams will secure their place at next year’s International Wheelchair Basketball Federation World Championships, scheduled to take place in German city Hamburg.

The one-group women’s competition also begun today with Paralympic champions the US defeating Brazil in a 55-53 thriller having come from five points down at the end of the third quarter.

Brazil’s Vileide Almeida and the US’s Desiree Miller both registered 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The other match in the women’s tournament was won by Canada, 81-27 at the expense of Colombia.
