The dates for the 2018 International Wushu Federation (IWUF) World Taijiquan Championships in Burgas have been confirmed.

Competition will take place in the Bulgarian city between September 26 and 30, the govering body announced.

It comes after the city was awarded the event at the World Junior Wushu Championships last year, which were also held in Burgas.

Stefan Kolev, the President of the Bulgarian Wushu Federation, said some of the officials involved with the junior event would also have a role to play next year.

"Two World Championships in such a short period is dream for which we have been working for many years," he said.

"We have devoted all our efforts to achieving it."

Taijiquan is a form of wushu which is often called tai-chi.

"We are glad that the sixth World Junior Wushu Championships were successfully held in Burgas in 2016," said Penka Georgieva, a member of the Organising Committee.

"Also, it is a great honour for us to hold a meeting of the Executive Board of IWUF during the Championships."

Peter Dragoev, the vice president of the Bulgarian Wushu Federation, added: "Taijiquan is the most widely practiced style in wushu.

"It is popular due to its health building and longevity benefits, but it is also a very serious martial art."

Wushu was one of three sports from a final shortlist of eight not to be recommended for inclusion at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

It missed out alongside bowling and squash.

Baseball/softball, climbing, karate, skateboarding and surfing were all accepted.
