Ukraine's Oleg Verniaiev successfully defended his men's individual all-round gymnastics title by producing a strong series of displays at the Nangang Exhibition Centre here today.

The Rio 2016 silver medallist triumphed at Gwangju 2015 and had justified his clear status as favourite when qualifying in first place during the team event.

Verniaiev began to pull away from his rivals during the first three disciplines of the event, with the double European champion securing 44.150 points by the half-way stage.

With the parallel bars to come, the apparatus he won gold on at Rio 2016, victory seemed almost assured for the Ukrainian.

Verniaiev produced impressive displays in the rings and parallel bars, delivering the highest scores on both, to seal victory on 88.300 points.

Japan's Shoho Nonomura rose up the standings as the competition progressed to take the silver medal, achieving a score of 86.050.

The podium was completed by fellow Japanese gymnast Wataru Tanigawa, after he managed 85.700.

Romania's Larisa-Andreea Ioardache emerged as the winner of the women’s event, producing consistent displays on the floor, beam, uneven bars and vault to score 56.750.

She was pushed by Japan’s Asuka Teramoto, who ended with the silver medal on 55.650.

The podium was completed by Canada’s triple Pan American Games gold medallist Ellie Black, as she scored 54.950.

Elsewhere in the venue, Hungary’s fencing success continued with their third gold medal in consecutive days.

Anna Marton reached the women’s sabre final and then saw off the challenge of South Korea’s South Korea’s Hwang Seona by a 15-12 score.

Italy’s Chiara Mormile and Misaki Emura of Japan claimed bronze medals, having tasted semi-final losses.

Ukraine’s Dmytro Chuchukalo secured the men’s foil gold in a dramatic manner, having edged through to the final by beating Italy’s Alessandro Paroli 15-13.

He would then find himself locked at 14-all with Japan’s Kyosuke Matsuyama in the final, but earned the match winning point to secure the gold.

Ukraine’s Rostyslav Hertsyk.earned bronze, alongside Paroli.

Judo competition was book-ended by gold medals for Japanese judokas with the surname Tatsukawa.

Rina Tatsukawa was first to claim success, as she saw off the challenge of Brazil’s Eleudis De Souza Valentim in the women’s under-52kg final by achieving a golden score.

South Korea’s Park Da Sol and Italy’s Giulia Pierucci rounded off the podium.

Arata Tatsukawa then triumphed in the final judo bout of the day, defeating France’s Alexis Urani by ippon in the men’s under-73kg competition.

South Korea’s Kang Heon-cheol and Kazakhstan’s Bekadil Shaimerdenov secured the bronze medals.

Sandwiched between the twin Tatsukawa triumphs, South Korea’s world champion An Baul completed the success defence of his men’s under-66kg title.

The Olympic silver medallist beat Mongolia’s Erkhembayar Battogtokh with a waza-ari, while Japan’s Norihito Isoda and Russia’s Abdula Abdulzhalilov secured bronze medals.

France’s first gold medal of the Unviersiade was secured by Lola Benarroche, as she overcame South Korea’s Kwon You-jeong by a waza-ari.

The bronze medals were won by Yui Mura of Japan and Brazil’s Tamires Crude Andrade Da Si.

The host nation proved the dominant force in roller skating competition, winning gold and silver medals in three of today’s four races.

Yang Ho-Chen secured victory in front of a home crowd in the women’s 15,000 metres elimination race, leading the five remaining skaters across the line in 26min 57.916sec.

She ended clear of her team-mate Li Meng-Chu and Colombia’s Maria Gil Taborda, who clocked 26:58.034 and 26:58.964 respectively.

Yang sealed her third gold medal of the Universiade by achieving a time of 1:34.805 in the women’s 1,000m, with her team-mate Li forced to settle for a third silver medal behind her compatriot in 1:34.884.

South Korea’s An Yi-seul won bronze in 1:35.002.

Huang Yu-Lin acheieved victory in the men’s 1,000m sprint in 1:24.020, with Ko Fu-Shiuan replicating Li in winning a third silver medal by clocking 1:24.476.

A time of 1:24.520 was enough for South Korea's Jeong Byeong-kwan to clinch bronze.

Colombia had won the first roller sport event of the day, as Carlos Franco Perez triumphed in the men’s 15,000m elimination race in 24:09.630.

Ko was the silver medallist in 24:09.763, while Colombia’s Carlos Perez Canaval managed 24:09.999 to complete the top three.
