A World Sailing course which received funding from the St Kits and Nevis Olympic Committee (SKNOC) saw 10 people participate.

The World Sailing Level One Technical Course for Coaches was organised by the St Kitts and Nevis Sailing Association and thanks to a sum of money donated by SKNOC, expert Tim Cross was able to attend and deliver the five-day training exercise at Frigate Bay.

Topics covered during the course included developing a national training programme, land drills, gybing, lesson planning and delivery, use of safety and power boats and an introduction to racing.

After the lessons were finished, those who attended were given certificates and all pledged to provide coaching to their yacht clubs.

“The St Kitts and Nevis Sailing Association would like to express its deepest gratitude to the SKNOC for the assistance given as it continues to foster greater interest in and enhance the overall performance of the sport of sailing,” the Association said in a statement.

“First there were boats, then trained instructors, now it’s to discover the talent and nurture the federation’s future sailing champions at the regional, Pan American and eventually Olympic level.”

St Kitts and Nevis have featured in every Olympic Games since Atlanta 1996.

They have only competed in one sport – athletics - at all their appearances and have never won a medal.

Sprinter Kim Collins is arguably the country’s most famous sports personality having claimed gold at the 2003 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Championships in Paris in the men’s 100 metres.

He also won four World Championship bronze medals and collected a gold at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.

Earlier this week, Collins was one of six new members elected onto the IAAF Athletes' Commission.
