Germany's Alexander Zverev stunned Roger Federer of Switzerland to clinch his fifth title of the year as he won the men's Rogers Cup in Montreal.

Zverev, the current world number eight, became just the third man to beat Federer in 2017 as he claimed a 6-3, 6-4 victory at the Uniprix Stadium in the Canadian city.

The victory for the 20-year-old German, considered one of the rising stars in the sport, saw him seal the second Masters 1000 crown of his career.

In the women's event, Ukrainian Elina Svitolina overcame Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark 6-4, 6-0 at the Aviva Centre in Toronto.

Federer, who last month secured his eighth Wimbledon crown, had come into the match as the favourite and was looking to claim a third Rogers Cup success.

The 36-year-old Swiss had only lost twice in his previous 37 matches but was outfought by the German, who produced a superb display to win in straight sets.

Zverev, who triumphed in Washington last week, kept Federer at bay early in the first set before he found the break he needed to edge in front.

Having saved break point in the second set, Zverev managed to get on top and eventually proved too strong for the formidable Swiss.

Federer said he would take stock of his current condition before deciding to play at the Cincinnati Open and hopes to be in the best possible shape for the US Open, which begins at Flushing Meadows in New York City later this month.

"Looking ahead to the US Open, obviously I want to be in the best possible shape," he said.

"Winning my third of the year, my 20th Grand Slam, would be completely insane.

"I just hope I'm going to be 100 per cent ready when the moment arises."

Svitolina, seeded fifth in the women's tournament, added to her victories in Dubai and Rome with another accomplished performance in her encounter with Wozniacki.

The Ukrainian's triumph handed her a fifth title of the season, while Wozniacki has now been beaten in all six finals she has played this year.

"It's amazing that I achieved this, but I try to take one tournament at a time, to not think so much about all the past titles," said Svitolina.

"Of course it brings me confidence, I have the experience from those finals, but I try to take it as a new challenge and always look forward to it."
