Saif bin Futtais of the United Arab Emirates took gold in the men's skeet competition at the seventh Asian Shotgun Championships in Kazakhstan's capital Astana.

Gusty winds blew across the Eldorado Shooting Club throughout the event but the Emirati shooter was unaffected and sealed first place with a score of 53 in the final.

"Thanks God, I have managed to overcome the climate conditions and all circumstances including psychological and mental considerations together with the stiff competition and high-class athletes, especially from the host country, China, and South Korea," said bin Futtais.

"I dedicate this achievement to our leadership, and it adds to other achievements made this year at various levels.

"This year has been marked by a good performance by UAE shooters in general and me in particular."

Bin Futtais competed at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, placing 29th in the men's skeet.

Alexandr Yechshenko delighted home fans by claiming the silver medal.

He scored 49 in the final while bronze went to Makoto Yokouchi of Japan, who posted a total of 41.

Rio 2016 bronze medallist, Abdullah Al-Rashidi of Kuwait, finished in a disappointing 12th place today.

He represented the Independent Olympic Athletes at Rio 2016 after the International Olympic Committee suspended Kuwait from the Games following the introduction of sports legislation they claimed threatened the autonomy of the country's National Olympic Committee.

Wei Meng of China won the women's equivalent event yesterday.

The Championships are due to conclude tomorrow.
