Hosts and defending champions Serbia are through to the semi-finals of the World Men's Junior Water Polo Championships after beating Italy today at the Sports Center Milan Gale Muškatirović in Belgrade.

Djorde Vucinic top scored for the Serbians with four goals as they claimed a 17-9 win.

The quarter-final tie was a repeat of the 2015 final, which Serbia had won 13-12.

Awaiting the home nation in the semi-finals are Greece.

They came from 5-3 behind at the end of the third quarter to defeat Spain 8-7.

Konstantinos Gkiouvetsis scored the decisive goal inside the final minute.

The other last-four encounter pits Croatia against Hungary after both came through their quarter-final encounters.

Croatia edged the United States 5-4 and Hungary overcame Montenegro 12-8 with half of their goals coming through Kristian Manhercz.

Manhercz is now the top goalscorer at the Championships with a total of 22.

The semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow.

They will be preceded by the fifth-to-eighth-place classification matches between Spain and Italy and the US and Montenegro. 

In today's ninth to 12th place classification matches, Canada beat China 17-4 and Russia defeated Australia 11-8.

Canada will face Russia in the ninth-place play-off, while China and Australia will go head-to-head for the right to finish 11th.

Japan and The Netherlands will contest the 13th place play-off after both came through their classification matches.

The Dutch beat Iran 14-5 and Japan triumphed 19-11 at the expense of Egypt.

The 17th to 20th place classification matches saw New Zealand defeat South Africa 6-5 and Argentina overcome Puerto Rico 7-5.

New Zealand and Argentina will contest the 17th place play-off, while South Africa and Puerto Rico will battle it out to avoid finishing in last position.
