The 44-year-old German won a gold medal at the Salt Lake City 2002 Olympics, two at Turin 2006 and a fourth and final title at Vancouver 2010.

Lange, also an eight-time world champion, is due to begin his new role on October 1.

He will work alongside head coach Steffen Sartor, another German, and has signed a contract that expires at the end of the winter season.

Lange's main objective will be to prepare the South Korean team for the Olympic Games in Pyeongchang next February.

South Korea has never won an Olympic luge medal.

Their dominance usually lies in skating events but Lange and Sartor will be hoping to guide the hosts to the podium at the Alpensia Sliding Centre.

South Korea's luge squad will include yet another German, Aileen Frisch, a double World Championship gold medallist, after she was approved for special naturalisation and given a South Korean passport. 

Leading the team will be Sartor who, originally known as Steffen Skel, took the name of his wife Diana Sartor when they married.

Diana is a former German skeleton competitor who finished fourth at both Salt Lake City 2002 and Turin 2006.

Steffen, meanwhile, claimed a fourth place finish in the men's doubles luge event at Salt Lake City 2002 as well as two World Championships doubles silver medals.
