Redfern was elected at the FIL General Assembly and replaces the outgoing Stan Cockerton of Canada.

The General Assembly also saw major changes made to the governance structure of the organisation, which include an expanded Board.

It is hoped this will enable the organisation to focus on international development, their Olympic vision and evolution of the World Championship.

The changes follow the hiring of Jim Scherr as the FIL's first chief executive.

"The appointment of our first chief executive and our first inclusion in the multi-sport World Games are important steps towards achieving our strategic vision of Olympic inclusion and provide an excellent platform for the organisation to move forward," said Redfern.

"The Board and General Assembly have recognised a need for change, while ensuring the continuity of the development programme, both in new countries and in helping existing member countries grow even stronger."

The United States' Steve Stenersen was re-elected as vice-present on a one-year term, while England's Ron Balls will continue as the organisation's secretary general for the next two years.

Scotland's Lorna Powell was elected to a one-year term as competition director, while England's Don Blacklock has become the technical director for a two-year spell.

Bob DeMarco of the United States will be the FIL's development director for the next year after being re-elected, while fellow Americans Tom Hayes and Howard Borkan have been appointed as Olympic vision director and legal counsel respectively.
