Mastercard has become the latest official sponsor of the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Ashgabat.

The financial company have been added to the list of partners for the fifth edition of the Games which are due to take place in Turkmenistan's capital city between September 16 and 27.

They already sponsor a number of large profile sports events, such as the UEFA Champions League and golf’s Open Championship.

Igor Stepanov, Mastercard Europe’s country manager for Turkmenistan, Georgia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, said the company are happy to support the multi-sport event.

"We strongly believe in the high potential of Turkmenistan's market, not only in terms of cashless payments, but also as one of the most exceptional tourist destinations," he said.

"No doubt, the Games in Ashgabat will grant us a spectacular sport show which will leap up the hearts of millions of people all over the world."

AIMAG Executive Committee chairman Dayanch Gulgeldiyev said they are "extremely excited" at having a company the size of Mastercard on board.

"We are grateful for the support of a prestigious international brand like Mastercard with such a strong sport background, which makes them a great addition to the Ashgabat 2017 family," Gulgeldiyev added.

Athletes from Asia and Oceania are set to participate at the Games across 21 sports, with 15 venues at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex being used.

Ashgabat were awarded hosting rights for the event by the Olympic Council of Asia in 2010.
