Hockey Canada has invited 67 players to attend training camps for the national women's development and under-18 teams.

The camps will take place from August 5 to 13 at the Markin MacPhail Centre in Calgary, and will see 25 development team invitees and 42 under-18 hopefuls take part.

Members of the development team will participate in several practice drills and inter-squad games, as well as dry-land training, fitness testing and classroom sessions.

The camp will also feature Japan's national women's programme and a select team of U Sports players.

U Sports is the national governing body for university sport in Canada.

Following the camp, Hockey Canada will continue to evaluate players with their club teams during the 2017-2018 season, as they prepare to select a development squad for January's Nations Cup in Füssen in Germany.

The under-18 players will be split into two teams, red and black, with both playing Russia's under-18 squad.

Of the 42 under-18 players participating in the selection camp, 23 will be chosen to play for the team in a three-game series against the United States between August 17 and 20 in Lake Placid.

A close eye will be kept on the under-18 players following the camp in preparation for next year's International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Women’s World Championship in Nizhny Novgorod in Russia.

Melody Davidson, Hockey Canada’s general manager of national women’s team programmes, led the player selection with assistance from a number of regional scouts.

"This is an important opportunity for us to not only evaluate some of Canada’s top female talent within our under-18 and development pool, but also to continue to work with these athletes on their individual growth on and off the ice," said Davidson.

"This year we have the unique opportunity to have U Sports as well as national team talent from Japan and Russia to provide an additional competitive element to our summer camps.

"We're looking forward to starting the 2017-2018 season with these players."
