Canada cruised into the quarter-finals of the International Basketball Federation Women’s Under-19 World Championship at the Palasport Primo Carnera in Udine.

The Group C winners headed into their last-16 match as the clear favourites against Mexico, who were beaten in all three of their group ties.

Canada stormed into a 22-5 lead in the first quarter of the match to stamp their authority of the tie, before stretching their led to a 59-23 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Mexico were able to restore pride by outscoring their opponents 20-5 in the quarter, but ended with a 64-43 defeat.

Following their success, Canada will take on China in the quarter-final stage after they beat Egypt 85-43.

Japan preserved their 100 per cent record to date, as the Group D winners convincingly overcame South Korea 86-47 to reach the last eight.

They will meet Spain, who overcame hosts Italy 59-49.

France beat Hungary 73-58 to set up a match against the United States, who are seeking to secure a seventh straight title at the Championships.

The American team stormed into the last eight by thrashing Puerto Rico 104-46.

Australia edged out Latvia 61-56 in their last-16 match, with the winners set to meet Russia, after they won 90-66 against Mali.

Quarter-finals are then scheduled to take place on July 28, with the semi-finals taking place a day later.

The final and third place play-off are scheduled to take place on July 30.
