Both sides went into their final group clash with two victories from two, so knew that another success would see them finish at the summit of the group in the Indian city.

Japan enjoyed a narrow 15-14 lead after the first quarter, but Australia - who are five-time Olympic medallists - took command in the second and third stanzas and built a lead heading into the last.

The fourth quarter was tied 24-24 with Japan unable to claw their way back into the contest.

Kelsey Griffin was a star performer for Australia, contributing 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists in the victory at the Kanteerava Indoor Stadium.

In the other match in the group, South Korea eased past The Philippines 91-63.

Both sides were searching for their first win with the Koreans finishing third and their opponents coming last.

Group A saw China win their third game in three to top the pile.

They proved far too strong for winless North Korea and emerged with a 110-53 success.

New Zealand ensured they finished second in the group after edging Chinese Taipei, who finished third, 59-53.

The Kiwis had to battle back after trailing 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

All eight sides at the tournament have progressed to the quarter-finals, with the group phase simply deciding the make-up of the last eight ties. 

China will face The Philippines, with Australia playing North Korea.

New Zealand will battle with South Korea while Japan and Chinese Taipei will lock horns. 

All of the quarter-finals will be played on Thursday (July 27). 

The top four countries will qualify for the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup in Spain.
