International Federation for Intellectual Disability Sport (Inas) have warned Mexican organisers they face losing the right to stage the 2017 Swimming Championships if they fail to provide crucial documents.

According to Inas, local organisers recently requested moving the venue for the competition from Morelia to Aguascalientes

However, Inas said that a subsequent site visit revealed that documents guaranteeing the proposed pool was suitable for major international competitions were not available.

It has been claimed by the governing body that they had been assured by the Mexican Federation for Special Athletes (FEMEDE) that the documentation would be provided by July 12.

But Inas say they are yet to receive the documents from FEMEDE, which might force them to change the host for the key international competition.

“We are very keen to keep the Championships in Mexico, as it would be a landmark event,” said David Harman, INAS’ sport director for swimming, who visited the site in June.

“The first INAS event of its kind to take place in the Americas, it offers many benefits for the reach and profile of swimming for athletes with intellectual impairments, for the local community and for the country and region as a whole.

“The bid and site visit showed the huge potential and ambition of the local organising committee, with excellent plans for the infrastructure, facilities for the athletes, media and broadcasting.

“However, whilst I was hugely encouraged by the plans of the local organising committee in many areas, crucial elements of their preparations fell short of INAS’ standards.

“Primarily I was disappointed to learn that there was no certification that the newly proposed competition pool meets the requirements of a major international event, as laid out in the hosting contract.

“To ensure the quality of the event and in the interests of the athletes taking part, we may have no choice but to remove the right to host the competition from a very capable local organising committee if the necessary paperwork is not received.”

Countries have been notified of a potential location change, with Inas having already suspended entries following their site visit in June.

The Championships are currently scheduled to take place from November 27 and December 4.
