Belgium’s men and the United States’ women both defeated Germany today to claim the titles at the Hockey World League semi-final event in Johannesburg.

The US were involved in a thrilling victory which required a shootout to be decided at the University of the Witwatersrand after the match finished 1-1 in the South African city.

Germany’s male team could not do any better than their female colleagues as they were crushed 6-1 by the Belgians.

In the women’s final, Camille Nobis had given Germany the lead in the 38th minute when she deflected the ball past Jackie Briggs.

But Taylor West set up a shootout after finishing off a penalty corner move 20 minutes later.

Briggs pulled off three saves to set up the moment for Erin Mason to complete the victory, a chance she took to give the US a 3-2 win in the shootout.

England finished in third place after defeating Argentina 5-2.

All of England’s scorers were part of the gold medal winning Great Britain team from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as Giselle Ansley bagged a brace while Sophie Bray, Laura Unsworth and Susannah Townsend also found the net.

The men’s final was a rather one-sided affair with Arthur van Doren putting Belgium in front in the 14th minute.

Tom Grambusch equalised two minutes later, but then the Belgian men took control of the final and scored five unanswered goals.

Tom Boon got the first of these in the 20th minute following a penalty corner before Amaury Keusters and Cedric Charlier also found the net.

Charlier doubled his tally in the 58th minute before Augustin Meurmans rounded proceedings off.

Third place was secured by Australia, who thrashed Spain 8-1.
