France’s Marc-Antoine Olivier claimed men’s five kilometre open water swimming gold as the first medals of the International Swimming Federation (FINA) World Aquatics Championships were claimed in Budapest.

The 21-year-old, who finished as the bronze medallist in the 10km event at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, earned victory in a closely fought finish in Lake Balaton.

Olivier triumphed in a time of 54min 31.4sec, with Mario Sanzullo of Italy narrowly finishing adrift in 54:32.1.

Britain’s Tim Shuttleworth rounded off the podium places, ending a further 10 seconds adrift.

Russia’s Svetlana Kolesnichenko claimed the first synchronised swimming gold medal of the Championships.

Kolesnichenko topped the qualification standings in yesterday’s solo technical routine.

The 23-year-old delivered in the final by scoring 95.2036 points, winning her 12th world title in the process.

Kolesnichenko, a gold medallist in the team event at the Rio 2016 Olympics, was followed by Spain’s Ona Carbonell.

Carbonell took the silver with a score of 92.3893, while Ukraine’s Anna Voloshyna edged Japan’s Yukiko Inui to bronze by achieving a total of 91.9992.

Three diving gold medals were also awarded today, with the first being claimed by Australia’s Maddison Keeney.

She finished with a final score of 314.95 points, after six rounds of the women’s one metre springboard competition.

Russia’s Nadezhda Bazhina and Italy’s Elena Bertocchi completed the podium on 304.70 and 296.40 respectively.

There was victory for Qian Ren and Junjie Lian in the mixed 10m synchronised platform final, with the Chinese pair scoring 352.98.

Britain’s Matthew Lee and Lois Toulson were silver medallists on 323.28, with North Korea’s Kim Mi Rae and Hyon Il Myong securing bronze with a total of 318.12.

The men’s 3m synchronised platform event completed the day's action.

Russia’s Ilia Zakharov and Evgenii Kuznetsov won gold with a score of 450.30, with Siyi Xie and Yuan Cao of China ending as the runners-up on 443.40.

Ukraine’s Oleg Kolodiy and Illya Kvasha completed the podium on 429.99.
