Hamburg is set to host a packed weekend of competition with the World Triathlon Series (WTS) and Mixed Relay World Championships set to take place in the German city.

The WTS is returning to the German city for the ninth straight year, with competition scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Action will begin with the women’s race, with Bermuda’s Flora Duffy set to begin as the favourite to claim victory.

The world champion triumphed at the last two WTS legs in Yokohama and Leeds, with a hat-trick now a possibility in Hamburg.

Series leader Kirstin Kasper of the United States will be targeting success in the sprint distance event, with her compatriot Katie Zaferes also among the contenders.

Spain’s Fernando Alarza leads the current men’s standings, but his countryman Mario Mola will pose a considerable threat, having triumphed in Hamburg last year.

The Spanish challenge will also come through Javier Gomez, who missed the last WTS competition in Leeds.

Britain will look to Olympic silver medallist Jonathan Brownlee as he seeks to claim the world title later this year.

His team-mates Tom Bishop and Adam Bowden will aim to follow up their strong showings in Leeds.

The Mixed Relay World Championships will then take place on Sunday (July 16), just a month after the International Olympic Committee added the event to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme.

A total of 21 teams are expected to contest the event, which will see of two men and two women each complete the 300 metres swim, 6.6 kilometre bike and 1.6 km run course.

The United States are the defending champions, while Britain and Australia have also been tipped for success.
