Japan’s Yuya Oshima caused the biggest upset on day two of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Australian Open in Gold Coast, beating fifth seed Marcos Freitas of Portugal at the Carrara Indoor Sports Stadium.

Oshima, seeded 10th, registered an 11-7, 12-10, 11-8, 11-5 win over Freitas to book his place in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles draw.  

It followed an impressive  victory for compatriot Masaka Yoshida, who defeated ninth seed Mattias Karlsson of Sweden 11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 11-9, 8-11, 14-12 in the ITTF World Tour Platinum event. 

Awaiting Oshima in the last eight is England’s Paul Drinkhall, an 11-9, 6-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-8 victor at the expense of France’s Tristan Flore.

Yoshida, meanwhile, faces a last-eight encounter with France’s Simon Gauzy, who defeated India’s Sathiyan Gnanasekaran 11-7, 11-7, 7-11, 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 11-8.

Other Japanese players through to the quarter-finals are top seed Jun Mizutani and seventh seed Kenta Matsudaira.

Mizutani overcame fellow countryman Maharu Yoshima 5-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8, while Matsudaira triumphed 13-11, 8-11, 3-11, 6-11, 11-7, 11-6, 13-11 in a hard-fought contest against South Korea’s Lim Jonghoon.

The quarter-final schedule is completed by Mizutani’s meeting with South Korea’s Cho Seungmin, a 11-9, 11-3, 11-6, 11-7 winner over India’s Sanil Shetty, and Matsudaira’s clash with fourth-seeded Belarusian Vladimir Samsonov, who beat Singapore’s Gao Ning 6-11, 11-7, 11-2, 11-9, 19-17.

China were the dominant force today in the women’s competition as all six of their second-round representatives advanced through to the quarter-finals.

Top seed Zhu Yuling and third seed Chen Meng both accounted for Japanese rivals, as did Zhang Qiang and Gu Yuting.

Zhu beat Miyu Kato 11-9, 11-9, 12-10, 11-2 and Chen defeated Hina Hayata 11-7, 11-6, 11-7, 11-8.

Gu ended the hopes of Honoka Harimoto with an 11-8, 11-9, 10-12, 10-12, 11-8, 12-10 win.

Zhang overcame Miyu Maeda 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-8, 11-4.

There were also impressive performances from China's Chen Xingtong and Wang Manyu 

Chen beat 14th seed Yu Mengyu of Singapore 11-6, 11-4, 11-4, 11-7 and  Wang defeated South Korea’s Lee Eunhye 8-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7.

The two all-Chinese quarter-finals will see Wang face Chen Xingtong and Chen Meng meet Zhang.

Japanese opposition awaits both Zhu and Gu, who are due to go up against Maki Shiomi and Saki Shibata respectively.

Shiomi beat fellow qualifier Choi Hyojoo of South Korea 11-6, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10, 11-8.

Shibata, also a qualifier, defied the odds to win an all-Japanese encounter with 15th seed Yui Hamamato 11-8, 11-4, 11-3, 11-5.

The quarter-finals and semi-finals of both the men’s singles and women’s singles events are due to be played tomorrow.
