The Indonesian Football Association is to lead a consortium to discuss the possibility of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bid to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup, according to the organisation’s vice-chairman Joko Driyono.

Joko revealed the matter is due to be discussed at the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Council meeting on September 23 in Nusa Dua on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Besides Indonesia, other countries who are members of ASEAN include Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand.

"The meeting begins on September 22 when there will be a competition committee meeting," he was reported as saying by the country's news agency ANTARA News.

"The next day, there will be an AFF Council meeting, including the 2034 World Cup hosting, and at night there is an AFF award."

Among the issues due to be discussed are the number of ASEAN nations that will bid to joint host and the financial arrangements.

Joko added that talks will focus on the ASEAN’s readiness to organise the tournament, due to be contested by 48 teams from the 2026 edition onwards.

"That’s why we will also discuss the acceleration of improving the quality of football facilities and infrastructures," he said.

FIFA's current rules prevent Asian countries from bidding until 2034 at the earliest.

This is due to a continental rotation policy with Qatar staging the competition in 2022.

FIFA's ruling Council discussed the idea of altering their statutes regarding its World Cup rotation policy to go against the ruling "if circumstances so require" during its meeting prior to the Congress in Bahrain in May.

It was not put forward to the full Congress as FIFA instead decided to install a working group to look into any possible statute changes.

"Looking at the rotation, the 2034 World Cup will be held again in Asia," Joko said.

The ASEAN’s plans to host the World Cup first emerged in February, when the chairman of the Myanmar Football Federation (MFF), Zaw Zaw, revealed that the group had held talks about bidding.

The quadrennial tournament has only been held in Asia on one previous occasion, when Japan and South Korea co-hosted in 2002.

Last month, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed his country's desire to host the World Cup "in the future" during a meeting with FIFA counterpart Gianni Infantino.

Xi told Infantino the nation wishes to stage FIFA's flagship competition "at some stage".

Speculation has been growing in recent months that China, which has never hosted the tournament, would launch a bid for either the 2030 or 2034 World Cup.

Xi is spearheading a drive to develop Chinese football and has not hidden his wish that the country will one day host the event, with a view to eventually lifting the trophy.

It includes plans to make the game accessible to more than 30 million primary and secondary school children by 2020, as well as creating up to 20,000 football schools and laying 70,000 pitches.

Due to the continental rotation policy, China is not officially allowed to enter the race for the 2030 tournament at this stage.
