It was confirmed that the Greek will serve a further four years during the ETU’s General Assembly held in Muju in South Korea, which is currently hosting the 2017 World Taekwondo Championships here. 

Pragalos, who has been head of the ETU since 1999, is one of five continental taekwondo Presidents to be re-elected.

He joins the African Taekwondo Union’s General Ahmad Fouly, the Asian Taekwondo Union’s Kyu-seok Lee, the Oceania Taekwondo Union’s John Kotsifas and the Pan American Taekwondo Union’s Ji Ho Choi.

Greece’s Michail Fysentzidis has been elected ETU secretary general, while Bulgaria’s Slavi Binev, Spain’s Jesus Castellanos Pueblas, Italy’s Angelo Cito and Moldova’s Igor Yuzefovich have all been elected vice-presidents. 

As well as Fysentzidis, the new ETU Council also includes Romania’s Constantin Apostol, Poland's Artur Chmielarz, Turkey’s Oktay Duymaz, Ireland’s Martin Fleming, Bulgaria’s Andrei Georgiev and Russia’s Evgeny Kluychnikov.

Completing the list are Hungary’s Miklos Patakfalvy, Croatia's Franjo Prot, Azerbaijan’s Naghi Safarov, Ukraine’s Lesik Samadzhiya, Aleksandr Shlychkov, Portugal’s Jose Luis Sousa, and Austria’s Reza Zadehmohammad.

"I appreciate the trust that I have been shown all these years," Pragalos said in his acceptance speech.

"We are a family that shares the same vision and aspirations for the progress of the sport and I am honoured to continue serving taekwondo.

"In a spirit of unity, together with all MNAs (Member National Associations) and the new ETU Council, I am ambitious that the years to come will be determinant for taekwondo."

Fysentzidis entered the ETU structure in 2011 as a vice-president before becoming secretary general in 2013.

Like Pragalos, he will have an additional four years in his role.

"Ι look forward to collaborating with the new ETU Council and of course continue our joint efforts with President Sakis Pragalos, remaining aligned in a course to a better future for taekwondo," Fysentzidis said.

Andorra’s Padros Juanjo and Hungary's Marton Zsolt Krisztian were elected as ETU auditors.

The position of treasurer is held by Luxembourg’s Welu Norbert.

Chungwon Choue was re-elected President of World Taekwondo for a new four-year term at the body’s General Assembly, also held here in Muju. 

World Taekwondo announced in April that the South Korean, who was first elected to the role in 2004, was standing unopposed.

Choue replaced the controversial Kim Un-Yong following his arrest on embezzlement and bribery charges in South Korea, which ultimately led to him being expelled from the International Olympic Committee.

He completed the year that Kim had left on his term and was re-elected in 2005 for a four-year mandate, before he reclaimed the position in 2009 and again in 2013.
