Ado, who is looking to improve on her bronze medal from last year's Games in Costa Rica, proved too strong for her opposition this evening on home water.

She scored 15.50 points to win, while Japan's Nao Omura also qualified for tomorrow's semi-finals after finishing second on 12.47.

They joined Portugal's Teresa Bonvalot and Frankie Harrer of Germany, who made it through to the semi-finals from the first heat of the last 16 stage.

Bonvalot won the heat after she earned a score of 10.10, while Harrer completed the top two just behind on 9.90.

Leilani McGonagle of Costa Rica has been extremely impressive so far this weekend and she also made it through to the semi-finals after posting a score of 11.16 in the third contest this evening.

New Zealand's Ella Williams also advanced after finishing second on 9.76.

In the final action of today France's Johanne Defay joined Ado in the semi-finals after delivering another exceptional performance.

The 23-year-old scored 14.00 to win her quarter-final.

Bianca Buitendag of South Africa also qualified after finishing behind Defay on 12.50 points.

Action in the women's event is due to conclude tomorrow with the semi-finals, final and medal ceremony before the men's competition begins later on.

Earlier today Brazilian Minister of Sport, Leonardo Picciani, said his country would welcome the chance to host the 2018 World Surfing Games.

A host is yet to be revealed for next year's edition of the event but organisers are hoping to announce a venue within "the next 90 days".

"We have the intention to host the World Surfing Games maybe next year in the city of Búzios," Picciani said.

"It is a fantastic city in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

"Our confederation is talking to the ISA and we have strong support from our Government."

However, ISA President Fernando Aguerre revealed that Japan were interested in hosting the event while there are two other candidates in the Americas and in Europe.
