The governing body is asking its fans to choose between the designs drawn up by Jon Wooten, art director for Big Top Entertainment.

Erin Hamlin claimed the country's first-ever Olympic singles medal at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics wearing a helmet created by Wooten.

Hamlin made history when she secured bronze at the Games in the Russian city.

Fans can cast their vote on the team's website, while supporters are also encouraged to like USA Luge's Facebook page and follow the organisation's Twitter feed.

The poll will close on July 14 and the victorious design will be presented to the Olympic team nominees at a special gala event, due to take place on the final day of the International Luge Federation (FIL) World Cup competition in Lake Placid on December 16.

"The greatest thrill is knowing that every four years, the Olympics are held in different parts of the world, and I’m given the honour of designing and painting the helmets for the USA Luge team,” said Wooten. 

“While each Olympics has its own particular challenges in preparation, my goal is to come up with a unique design that exceeds those of the previous Olympics. 

"I achieve this by incorporating striking colours, bold shapes, and, of course, a patriotic theme.”

A total of 10 athletes are expected to form USA Luge's squad for Pyeongchang 2018, with the event scheduled to run from February 9 to 25.

The competitors will be hoping to build on the historic performance from Hamlin in Sochi.
