Nigeria has selected 14 athletes to compete at this year's World Taekwondo Championships in the South Korean city of Muju.

Nigeria Taekwondo Federation secretary general Taiwo Oriss confirmed the players had been chosen following three-day trials in Abuja.

Oriss vowed to ensure at least one athlete from the nation brings home a medal from the event, due to run from June 24 to 30 at the Taekwondowon.

He claimed he was impressed by the standard he witnessed at the trials in the Nigerian capital.

"You may recall that Nigeria last picked a medal at the World Championship 25 years ago when Emmanuel Peters from Delta State won bronze," he told the News Agency of Nigeria.

"We believe with the support of all and with the right motivation, our taekwondo athletes will do the nation proud."

Josephine Esuku, Sekinat Adebisi, Folake Abdullahi, Vivian Ndu, Juliet Dennis, Chisomu Ndima and Maryjane Ofuadinma are the female representatives.

Muhammed Ghali, Abubakar Adamu, Nduka Edwin, Aburime Santos, Segun Olushola, Henry Nxelu and Sunday Onofe have been selected to represent the men's side.

Nigeria was not represented at Rio 2016 as none of their athletes qualified.

The country's team failed to perform to expectations at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Morocco in February 2016.

As a result, a new competition was launched in a bid to find fresh talent.

Nigeria has won one Olympic taekwondo medal in its history.

Chika Chukwumerije won one of the two bronze medal matches against Uzbekistan's Akmal Irgashev in the over-80 kilogram category at Beijing 2008.

Chukwumerije also won the All-Africa Games title in Algiers in 2007.
