The 2012 winners ended with an unrivalled total of 109 points as today’s pairs and women’s free skating marked the end of the action.

Russia moved up to second place to claim the silver medal with 105, while three-time and defending champions the United States earned the bronze with 97.

Japan’s Mai Mihara and Wakaba Higuchi put out spectacular displays to finish second and third in the women’s free skating, collecting 11 and 10 points respectively.

Mihara’s performance to "Cinderella" featured seven clean triples and excellent spins and saw her score a personal best with 146.17 points.

Higuchi’s programme to "Scheherazade" was clean with the maximum of seven triples and she also posted a personal best with 145.30.

Sumire Suto and Francis Boudreau-Audet came sixth in the pairs free skating and contributed seven points to the team score.

"I am happy and surprised that we ended up in first place and I am very grateful," Japan team captain Kana Muramoto said.

"I am too happy for words actually.

"I think the ladies put on a wonderful performance tonight and also the pair did a wonderful job."

Two-time and reigning world champion Evgenia Medvedeva scored 12 for Russia with her first place in the women’s free skating.

The 17-year-old put on a mesmerising performance of her programme to "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close", reeling off seven triples, including two triple-triple combinations, level-four spins and footwork, to achieve a new record score of 160.46.

Elena Radionova also delivered a strong performance to "Tosca", but she stumbled on an under rotated double axel.

The two-time European silver medallist ranked fifth in the free skating with 137.08.

Earlier, Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov came second in the pairs free skating.

Performing to "Music Was My First Love", the European champions produced a triple twist, triple toe-double toe, two more triple throws and level-four elements to score 142.38.

Ashley Wagner led the US with a sixth-place finish in the women’s free skating.

Her programme to "Exogenesis Symphony" included five clean triple jumps and earned her 133.26.

Karen Chen ranked ninth and pair skaters Ashley Cain and Timothy LeDuc placed fifth.

Canada remained in fourth place on 87 with their highest-scoring team members, Gabrielle Daleman and duo Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro, ranking fourth in their respective disciplines.

China, whose pair skaters Cheng Peng and Yang Jin came third, placed fifth with 80.

France remained in sixth place with 62, despite Vanessa James and Morgan Cipres winning the pairs free skating with a sensational performance to "The Sound of Silence" and a personal best of 146.87.

The fifth edition of the ISU World Team Trophy concludes tomorrow with the Exhibition Gala.

A total of 28,000 spectators attended the three days of competition.
