An international football friendly between Ivory Coast and Senegal was abandoned after fans invaded the pitch and confronted the players at the Stade Charléty in Paris.

The African rivals were drawing 1-1 in the 88th minute when a group of fans rushed onto the pitch, with one rugby tackling Senegal's Lamine Gassama.

Players were told by French referee Tony Chapron to return to the dressing rooms before he chose to end the fixture.

Moments before the trouble began, a group of spectators outside the ground climbed over perimeter fencing and entered the stadium.

Sadio Mane had opened the scoring for Senegal with a penalty after 68 minutes, but Gohi Cyriac levelled three minutes later.

It is the second time in five years that a match between the two nations has been abandoned due to crowd trouble.

A play-off for qualification to the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, held in October 2012, was called off after missiles, stones, bottles and firecrackers were thrown onto the pitch in Senegal's capital Dakar.

The match was abandoned in the 78th minute with Ivory Coast leading 2-0 thanks to a brace from Didier Drogba.

Violence involving a large numbers of Senegal fans erupted after Drogba had scored his second goal from the penalty spot.

Senegal were subsequently disqualified from the competition with Ivory Coast awarded a 2-0 win and qualification for the finals courtesy of a 6-2 victory in the two-legged tie.

Last year’s UEFA European Championships in France were marred by crowd trouble.

UEFA expressed their "utter disgust" at violent clashes between fans of England and Russia during their Group B match.

The pre-match build-up to the encounter had been overshadowed by three-days of clashes in Marseille, involving supporters from both nations, with French police using water cannons and tear gas in a bid to halt the violence.
