FIFA, virtual reality and broadcast rights for major sports events are among the key themes set to be discussed during the 2017 edition of SPORTELAmerica, which gets underway here tomorrow.

Delegates and officials from some of the world's leading companies in the industry have arrived here for the three-day convention, scheduled to conclude on Thursday (March 16).

The event begins tomorrow with an expert panel session, which will explore ways in which sports agencies can exploit the "power vacuum" in Latin America left by the corruption investigation into FIFA.

Entitled "Power Vaccum: opportunities for agencies in Latin America", the panel will delve into ways companies can benefit from the United States Department of Justice probe into widespread wrongdoing within football.

More than 40 FIFA officials and entities have been indicted on charges largely relating to bribes and kickbacks from marketing and broadcasting deals in the region.

The session, due to be held on the opening day of SPORTELAmerica on March 14, will look at how the investigation "shattered the existing ecosystem" and how it now offers a way into a previously untouchable market.

Speakers include Jochen Lösch, chief executive of international media company MP & Silva, and Oscar Lopez Garcia, executive vice-president of production company ImaginaUS.

Virtual and augmented reality, which have become increasingly popular within the global rights industry and is being used in a dedicate application by Olympic broadcaster Eurosport, will be the main topic on Wednesday (March 15) with a panel session.

The "VR and AR in the Americas" panel will look into the role virtual and augmented reality will continue to play going forward.

The session comes after one called "OTT Sports and the Americas" takes place, exploring how "over-the-top" content is being used and the current state of OTT.

This involves transmitting media via the internet without an operator of multiple cable or direct-broadcast satellite television systems.

La Liga, Spain's top flight football division whose representatives often attends SPORTEL events, will then give a presentation entitled "Digital Strategy, a Key Factor to increase the Value of Audiovisual Rights", with President Javier Tebas set to be the main speaker.

Various networking events will also be held during the convention, where a number of deals across the industry are likely to be struck.

The event will gather top level executives from a wide range of firms, including broadcasters, television networks, international sports federations, marketing agencies, production companies, rights owners and satellite providers.
