Russia’s Denis Dmitriev was among the winners on the opening day of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Track World Cup in Los Angeles, claiming the men’s sprint title.

The 30-year-old beat Germany’s Max Niederlag by 0.089sec in the gold medal final decider to win an event which saw New Zealand’s Sam Webster take bronze at the expense of France’s Quentin Lafargue.

There was also success for Russia in the women’s team sprint as Daria Shmeleva and Anastasiia Voinova clocked a time of 32.835sec to beat Canada’s Amelia Walsh and Kate O’Brien by 1.311 seconds in the gold medal final.

Completing the podium was South Korea’s Lee Hyejin and Kim Won Gyeong, who posted a time of 33.929 to overcome Colombia’s Juliana Gaviria Rendon and Martha Bayona Pineda by 0.354 seconds in the bronze medal final.

Ukraine’s Andrii Vynokurov finished top of the overall World Cup rankings for men’s sprint with 1,525 points.

Poland’s Kamil Kuczynski came second with 1,475 points, while Russia’s Pavel Yakushevskiy ended up third with 1,260.

The overall winners in the women’s team sprint were Spain with 1,590 points, 115 more than nearest challengers China.

Italy finished a further 450 points back in third.

Other victors today included Poland’s Szymon Sajnok in the men’s omnium and Belarus’ Yauheni Karaliok in the men’s scratch race.

Sajnok totalled 121 points to secure a winning margin of six over New Zealand’s Campbell Stewart and South Korea’s Park Sanghoon, the silver and bronze medallists respectively.

He finished top of the overall World Cup standings on 1,325, with France’s Morgan Kneisky and Great Britain’s Christopher Latham coming closest to matching the total on 650 apiece.

Following Karaliok onto the men’s scratch race podium were France’s Thomas Denis and New Zealand’s Thomas Sexton.

It ensured success for the Belarusian in the overall World Cup standings, moving him onto an unrivalled total of 825.

Ireland’s Felix English came second with 750, while Karaliok’s compatriot Raman Ramanau was third with 620.

Gold medals were also won today by Germany’s Kristina Vogel in the women’s keirin and the United States’ Kelly Catlin, Chloe Dygert, Kimberly Geist and Jennifer Valente in the women’s team pursuit.

Vogel beat Bayona Pineda by 0.111 in the first-to-sixth-place final as New Zealand’s Natasha Hansen finished 0.132 off the pace in third.

In the women’s team pursuit gold medal final, the American quartet clocked a time of 4:19.990 to defeat New Zealand’s Rushlee Buchanan, Michaela Drummond, Jaime Nielsen and Racquel Sheath by 4.629.

Canada’s Laura Brown, Jasmin Duehring, Annie Foreman-Mackey and Kirsti Lay won the bronze medal final in 4:25.487, beating Italy’s Martina Alzini, Simona Frapporti, Francesca Pattaro and Silvia Valsecchi by 4.129.

Ukraine’s Liubov Basova topped the overall World Cup standings for the women’s keirin with 1,325.

Belgium’s Nicky Degrendele came second with 1,225, while China’s Liu Lili was third with 1,090.

Italy head the final overall World Cup standings for the women’s team pursuit with 2,550.

They are followed by France with 2,250 points and then Poland with 2,000.

Action at the StubHub Center’s Velo Sports Center, which will be the track cycling venue used at the 2024 Olympics if Los Angeles win the hosting rights, is due to conclude tomorrow.
