South Africa secured their place in the super six stage of the qualifying event for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women's Cricket World Cup with a comfortable six-wicket win over Bangladesh at the Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu Stadium in Colombo.

A clinical bowling display from the South Africans saw Bangladesh bowled out for 100, with Shabnim Ismail and Sune Luus sharing six wickets during the Group B encounter.

Ismail recorded figures of 3-14, while Luus took 3-17 to ensure their batters had a relatively straightforward target to chase.

South Africa made light work of their pursuit of 101 for victory, with Lizelle Lee scoring 34 and Laura Wolvaardt reaching 30 as they knocked off the required runs in 25.2 overs.

Hosts Sri Lanka moved to the brink of joining South Africa in the super six as they thrashed Zimbabwe by eight wickets at the Nondescripts Cricket Club.

Inoka Ranaweera was the star performer as she took 4-18 to help skittle Zimbabwe for 149 in the Group A contest.

Chamari Athapaththu then hit nine powerful fours on her way to a 60-ball 58 as Sri Lanka breezed to their target with ease.

Sri Lanka will guarantee themselves a super six berth if they beat Thailand in their next match, scheduled for Monday (February 13).

Ireland also look set to reach the next round as Kim Garth’s 98 at the top of the order guided her side to a respectable 218-7 in their Group A clash with Thailand.

The Asian side never quite got going in their reply and they eventually fell 46 runs shy as they were restricted to 172 for 9.

Elsewhere in Group B, Scotland edged a thrilling match-up with Papua New Guinea as they claimed a narrow seven-run win.

The Pacific nation appeared on course for victory when they reached 72-0 in the 24th over in pursuit of 170, but Scotland fought back with a superb performance with the ball.

The top four teams from the competition in Sri Lanka will qualify for the ICC Women’s World Cup in England between June 24 and July 23.
