The 24-year-old clocked a time of 1min 06.25sec to hold off a strong challenge from Finland’s Nea Luukko, 0.73 seconds behind in the runners-up spot.

Rounding out the podium was Japan's Asa Ando, 0.92 seconds back.

"I am happy that I managed to win this competition, in spite of the fact that the course was not ideal," Yakovishina said.

"It’s the first time Kazakhstan has organised a competition of such level and I can say preparations are perfect.

"As for the quality of the course though, it can be better as the snow was not good today.

"That’s Alpine skiing, anything can happen because it’s nature.

"But in general, I’m happy."

In the equivalent men’s event, Italy’s Michelangelo Tentori successfully defended the title he won in Spanish city Granada two years ago.

His time of 1:03.03 saw him finish narrowly in front of Russia’s Evgenij Pyasik, who was just 0.03 seconds off the pace in the runners-up spot 

Pyasik's compatriot Simon Efimov was 0.74 seconds behind in third.

Tentori, who is also scheduled to compete in the slalom, giant slalom and Alpine combined, described his victory as "amazing".

"This is a back-to-back win in super-G," he said.

"I’m very happy and I hope that this is just the beginning."

Alpine skiing action is due to continue tomorrow, when the women's Alpine combined competition takes centre stage.
