Italy beat Latvia in a 7-6 thriller at the World Junior-B Curling Championships in Östersund in Sweden today to leave Group A wide open with two days of round-robin action remaining.

The Latvians had survived unbeaten through the first three days of competition but are now one of four teams in the group to have suffered one defeat.

They, along with Russia and Czech Republic, lie on three wins from four.

Italy top the group after triumphing in four of their five clashes so far.

Russia beat the Czechs 4-3 in the other top-of-the-table clash today.

China and Denmark each remain unbeaten after four matches apiece in Group B.

China beat Spain 6-3 while Denmark overcame Hungary 7-4.

Spain, Slovenia and Slovakia all lie on two wins out of four.

Germany won twice more to assume pole position in Group C.

They beat Turkey 4-3 and Japan 8-0 to move onto five wins from five.

Turkey remain in second place after four wins from five.

The top two teams in each men's and women's round-robin group will proceed to the quarter-finals along with the third-placed team with the best draw shot challenge.

The other third-placed teams will play a qualification game to determine the last quarter-finalist.

Competition is open to junior teams from all World Curling Federation Member Associations that have not already qualified for the 2017 World Junior Curling Championships in South Korean city Gangneung.

The top three men's and women's teams overall will qualify for the Championships, which are scheduled to take place from February 16 to 26 and are a test event for the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang.

Round-robin action in Östersund is due to run through to Sunday (January 8).
