Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud looks well positioned to continue his 100 per cent start to the speed season this weekend after clocking the fastest time in the second downhill training session for the International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup in Val Gardena in Italy.

Jansrud, winner of the season-opening downhill and super-G events in French resort Val d’Isère earlier this month, finished 12th in the first training run yesterday but underlined his superiority today with a time of 1 min 57.83sec.

The United States’ Steven Nyman was only 0.05 seconds slower on the Saslong course, where he has celebrated all three of his World Cup wins in 2006, 2012 and 2014.

Austria’s Max Franz was third in 1:57.95, following up his sixth place from yesterday and showing that he is one to contend with.

Yesterday’s fastest skier, Matthias Mayer of Austria, was 22nd in 1:58.91.

The downhill is scheduled to take place on Saturday (December 17), with the super-G set for tomorrow.

Today’s women’s downhill training in Val d’Isère saw Italy’s Sofia Goggia post the quickest time of 1:46.48.

The 24-year-old finished 0.31 seconds ahead of Austria’s Cornelia Huetter, while defending overall champion Lara Gut of Switzerland was 0.85 seconds off the pace in third.

Goggia has begun the season with four podiums, including runners-up finishes in the giant slalom in Sestriere in Italy and the downhill in Lake Louise in Canada.

She also managed third-place finishes in the giant slalom in American resort Killington and the super-G in Lake Louise.

Gut, who was quickest in the first training run yesterday in 1:46.90, is currently second in the overall standings.

She trails American Mikaela Shiffrin, who is not competing this weekend, by 105 points.

The women’s downhill is scheduled for Saturday with a Alpine combined race set for tomorrow and a super-G penned for Sunday (December 18).

Gut won the Alpine combined and downhill races in Val d'Isere last year.
