Spain’s Carolina Marin will face India’s Pusarla Sindhu during the women’s singles group stage at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Dubai World Superseries Finals, with the draw providing a rematch of the Rio 2016 Olympic gold medal game.

Marin came from a game down to win the Olympic final back in August and another closely fought clash between the pair is expected in Group B here in Dubai.

Marin and Sindhu had finished seventh and eighth in the Destination Dubai rankings, but the Olympic gold and silver medallists being paired together during today’s group stage draw provided a headline meeting at the season-ending event.

They join second seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan and China’s Sun Yu in Group B of the tournament, which features the top eight available players.

Chinese Taipei's world number one Tai Tzu Ying, who topped the Destination Dubai rankings, will face the challenge of China’s He Bingjiao, Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon and South Korea’s Sung Ji Hyun in Group A.

Men’s singles top seed Jan Ø. Jorgensen reflected that players being seeded from the Super Series tournament rankings had provided a different complexion to the tournament.

"Even though I ended top of the rankings, you have a player like Lee Chong Wei, who was one of the last [to qualify]," the Danish star said.

"I think you could maybe think about seedings from the world rankings, which give you a clear view who is doing well through the year.

"It also gives some spice to the tournament, like you can see with the huge game between Carolina and Sindhu in the group stages.

"You really have to play well, even in the men’s singles, where Chen Long is missing."

Despite the absence of Olympic champion Chen, who declined his wildcard entry, Denmark's Jorgensen will still face Chinese opposition in the round robin stage after being drawn alongside Tain Houwei in Group A.

Germany’s Marc Zwiebler and Hong Kong’s Hu Yun complete the four-man group.

Son Wan Ho will look to build on his victory in front of a home crowd at the Korea Open yesterday, when he faces Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus, Malaysia’s three-time Olympic silver medallist Lee and Denmark’s Rio 2016 bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen in Group B.

Ko Sung Hyun and Kim Ha Na were also victorious at the Korea Open and the South Korean pair will begin as the top seeds in the mixed doubles competition in Dubai.

They face the challenge of Denmark’s Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen in Group A, as well as the Indonesian pairings of Olympic champions Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, and Praveen Jordan and Debby Susanto.

Defending champions Chris and Gabrielle Adcock of England will take on second seeds Lu Kai and Huang Yaqiong of China in Group B.

The second Chinese pairing of Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen will also compete in the group, along with Kenta Kazuno and Ayane Kurihara of Japan.

Japan’s Olympic champions Misaki Matsutomo and Ayaka Takahashi will meet their compatriots Naoko Fukuman and Kurumi Yonao in Group A of the women’s doubles competition, which also includes Chang Ye Na and Lee So Hee of South Korea and China’s Luo Ying and Luo Yu.

Olympic silver medallists Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl of Denmark headline Group B, with the pair set to face the challenge of South Korea’s Jung Kyung Eun and Shin Seung Chan.

Vivian Hoo and Khe Wei Woon of Malaysia will also meet the Danish pairing, along with China’s Chen Qingchen and Jia Yifan.

In the men’s doubles, Takeshi Kamura and Keigo Sonoda of Japan will hope to live up to their status as top seeds, with the duo due to meet Denmark’s Mads Conrad-Petersen and Mads Pieler Kolding.

There will also be an all Indonesian clash when Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo take on their compatriots Angga Pratama and Ricky Karanda Suwardi.

Malaysia’s Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong head Group B, with the experienced Danish pairing Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen set to provide opposition.

They are joined by the two Chinese teams of Chai Biao and Hong Wei and Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen.

Competition is due to begin on Wednesday (December 14) at the Hamdan Sports Complex in Dubai, with the five days of action concluding on December 18 when the finals are held.
