Pavlos Kontides won his head-to-head battle with Australia’s Matt Wearn to secure victory in the laser class at the Sailing World Cup Final in Melbourne.

The Cypriot, who won silver at the London 2012 Olympic Games, was two points adrift of his rival heading into the medal race.

Crucially Kontides would take an early lead in the race, which offered double points, while Wearn saw his hopes fade when he was required to do a penalty turn.

Kontides would seal the race win to conclude the World Cup on 22 points, while Wearn would have to settle for the silver medal on 26.

Croatia’s Tonci Stipanovic ended on 41 points to earn the bronze, edging out Australia’s Tom Burton for the final podium spot.

"This is my first gold medal in the senior fleet," said Kontides.

"I've come close to winning many times but I'm really glad I have finally won.

"It was a great week with great conditions."
