Mayor Garcetti delivered his keynote address on Thursday (December 8) to a network of the world’s largest cities, announcing new actions for LA to curb greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and ramp up electric vehicle use.

LA 2024 expects the initiatives will put the city at the forefront of the Olympic Movement's drive for a more sustainable and greener Games.

"The LA 2024 team are so proud of our Mayor in taking this global leadership position on tackling climate change," Wasserman said today.

"The Olympic family can be totally confident that Los Angeles 2024 would be a Games-changer when it comes to environmental sustainability."

Garcetti unveiled plans to work in partnership with other west coast cities, in a bid to show LA’s intent to lead a collective effort against climate change.

He also committed LA to being a leading city in the fight to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees celsius, as set out in the Paris climate agreement.

Additionally, Garcetti highlighted LA’s existing target of 80 per cent GHG reductions by 2050, and discussed his plan to identify additional strategies to help stem climate change.

"Every city, every community, every individual has the power to fight climate change," he said at the Conference.

"We do not need to wait for any one person or Government to show us the way.

"Acting together as cities, we can set an example for our neighbours, spur clean energy innovation, clean up our air, and speed up the inevitable transition to a low-carbon, opportunity-rich future for us all."

In September, California Governor Jerry Brown signed new legislation reaffirming LA’s pledge to stage an "innovative, efficient, and environmentally friendly" 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Brown, who assumed office in 2011, signed a law requiring the state to reduce GHG emissions to 40 per cent below 1990 levels by the year 2030.

The state also established a committee that will focus on climate change policies to ensure transparency and accountability in programmes aimed at reducing GHG emissions.

GHG emissions in Los Angeles have already been reduced by 20 per cent since 1990, figures claim.

In a statement, Governor Brown called the new laws "far-reaching moves that continue California on its path of vast innovation and environmental resilience".

Budapest and Paris are also bidding for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Rome "suspended" itself from the process in October after failing to get support from the Italian capital's Mayor Virginia Raggi. 

The International Olympic Committee is due to elect its chosen host city at its Session in Lima on September 13.
