Olympic champion Taha Akgul will be one of the headline names competing at the United World Wrestling (UWW) Golden Grand Prix Final which begins tomorrow in the Baku Sports Hall in Azerbaijan.

The Turkish star, who boasts back-to-back world titles, will compete on the opening day of the event as he seeks further success in the men’s 125 kilogram freestyle division.

He previously earned Golden Grand Prix Final gold back in 2011, but will have to fend off the challenge of Olympic bronze medallists Geno Petriashvili of Georgia and Belarus’ Ibragim Saidau in a highly competitive event.

The three day competition is one of the most prestigious on the wrestling calendar, with the top four wrestlers in the world rankings being joined by the four best wrestlers from the Americas, Asia and Europe.

Gold medal winners from Africa and Oceania will also participate in the competition, which will feature Greco-Roman, freestyle and women’s events.

A battle between world champion Frank Chamizo of Italy and Russia’s Magomed Kurbanaliev is another eagerly anticipated contest, with the latter seeking to defend the title he claimed last year.

The pair could clash in the 65kg freestyle competition.

Women’s freestyle wrestling will come to the fore on Friday (November 25), with Azerbaijan’s Mariya Stadnik seeking to impress in front of a home crowd.

She will aim for a fourth Golden Grand Prix Final gold, but the Olympic silver medallist at 48kg will face the tough challenge of China’s Rio 2016 bronze medallist Sun Yanan and world junior champion Miho Igarashi.

Two Rio 2016 gold medallists will bring the event to a conclusion in Baku on Saturday (November 26), when they compete in Greco-Roman divisions.

The duo are both Cubans, with Ismael Borrero Molina set to begin as the favourite in the men’s under-59kg competition but will come under pressure from European champion Minigyan Semenov of Russia.

Mijain Lopez Nunez will then seek gold in the 130kg division, with the Cuban facing the challenge of world champion Riza Kayaalp of Turkey, who will hope to avenge his defeat in the Olympic final.
