After Bulgarian Olympian Stanimira Petrova wowed the home crowd with an opening day victory over Moldova's Yolia Korol, it was Asenova's turn today and she duly delivered. 

Roared on by the home crowd Asenova dominated her opponent throughout, securing a unanimous judges' decision victory over Lynsay Holdaway of Wales in the 45-48 kilogram category.

In the same weight division, Russia's Ekaterina Pinigina also advanced following a comprehensive judges' decision win over Demi-Jade Resztan of England.

There was some success for England, however, as Sandy Ryan advanced in the 60kg competition.

The Baku 2015 European Games bronze medallist defeated Agnes Alexiusson of Sweden on a split decision.

Judges three and five handed Ryan the win while judge one thought Alexiusson was the worthy winner.

Tetyana Kob of Ukraine, who represented her country at Rio 2016, also safely progressed after she overcame Turkey's Neriman Istik by a unanimous decision in the 51kg event.

The only stoppage of today's action arrived in the final bout of the evening as Aynur Rzayeva of Azerbaijan got the better of Ukrainian Iryna Vynnyk in the over 81kg division.

Rzayeva dominated throughout before referee Berna Yurtsever was forced to step in and call time on the contest in round four.

There was further Azerbaijani success in the 81kg competition, meanwhile, where Leyla Javadova prevailed over Croatian Lucia Brkljaca by a unanimous per cent judges decision. 

The competition is set to continue in Sofia tomorrow, with another eight bouts scheduled before the tournament takes a rest day on Monday (November 21).
