Hosts Cameroon got off to a winning start as the Africa Women Cup of Nations began at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde today.

The runners-up at the last edition of the tournament in Namibia in 2014 proved to be too strong for Egypt in Group A, recording a 2-0 victory in front of a capacity crowd of around 40,000.

Striker Aboudi Onguene gave the hosts the lead after 23 minutes, with the score remaining that way until the break.

A second goal arrived from the penalty spot, Christine Manie slotting past Egyptian keeper Maha Shehata.

The penalty was awarded after Njoya Ajara was fouled in the area.
