The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has revealed that it will celebrate its 30th anniversary next month with an awards ceremony which will honour contributions to the sport from the African country.

George Ashiru, the governing body's President, said the celebrations would also tie in with the 2016 edition of the annual Korean Ambassador’s Taekwondo Championship.

"It is noteworthy that this is the 30th year of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, since establishment," said Ashiru to The Leadership.

"It was formed in 1986 and inaugurated in 1987.

"We are giving out awards in recognition of the people who have, in one way or the other, supported the federation.

"Former President Olusegun Obasanjo incepted the training of taekwondo in the National Library.

"Considering his support for various sports in Nigeria, I think the federation will like to appreciate him.

"Barr Dalung supported us while we were preparing for the Olympics trials.

"We will like to honour him."

The anniversary celebrations and awards will take place between December 8 and 10 at the Molade Okoya Thomas Hall at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos.

Nigeria has won one Olympic taekwondo medal in its history.

Chika Chukwumerije won one of the two bronze medal matches against Uzbekistan's Akmal Irgashev, in the over-80 kilogram category at Beijing 2008.

Chukwumerije won the All-Africa Games title in Algiers in 2007.

Nigeria were not represented at Rio 2016 despite qualifying a competitor for the three Olympics prior to that.

The country's team failed to perform to expectations at the Olympic qualifying tournament in Morocco in February.

As a result, a new competition was launched in a bid to find fresh talent.
