Japan's Kenta Matsudaira and Mima Ito both prevailed in their respective finals at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Austrian Open at the Tips Arena in Linz today.

Matsudaira overcame Brazil’s Hugo Calderano in a nervy match to win the men's title at the World Tour event.

The Brazilian started the brighter, storming into an early lead after winning the opening game 11-6.

Matsudaira quickly composed himself and managed to bring the tie level, winning the second game 11-5.

Despite this recovery, he was soon back trailing as Calderano secured the third game 11-5.

Matsudaira was in emphatic form yesterday as he came from one game behind to cruise to victory over Koki Niwa, the tournament’s top seed, and he called upon that performance to claim the final three games 11-7, 11-9, 12-10, taking the title in the process.

The champion had earlier reached the final courtesy of a 11-2, 11-8, 11-7, 7-11, 11-9 win over German Benedikt Duda, while Calderano progressed after he saw off Japan’s Yuto Muramatsu, 11-5, 5-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-5.

Ito breezed to the women’s title as she thrashed her compatriot Yui Hamamoto in straight games.

The victor looked in ominous form all day and advanced to the final courtesy of a comfortable win over another of her compatriots, Honoka Hashimoto, in the semi-finals.

Hamamoto, meanwhile, needed all of her focus and energy to reach the gold medal match as she was forced to overcome South Korea’s Choi Hyojoo in a seven game thriller.

The final was nowhere near as close as Hamamoto’s semi-final, however, as Ito cruised past her opponent 11-4, 11-4, 11-7, 11-7, bringing the action inside the Tips Arena to a close.
