Egypt's wildcard entry Abdel Said claimed a shock victory at the latest leg of the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) World Cup Jumping Western European League at Veronafiere in Verona in Italy.

The world number 142 came out on top in a jump-off after 13 horse and rider combinations all went clear in the first round.

Said was then one of four riders to go clear again and he did so in the quickest time as he clocked 37.96sec on board mare Hope van Scherpen Donder.

"My mare has won three Grand Prix but not at this level," said Said, provided his wildcard opportunity by organisers despite his lowly ranking.

"She’s only nine and she doesn’t have mileage like most of the horses in today’s class, but I trusted her."

The Egyptian's success meant that world number two rider Simon Delestre of France had to settle for second place.

Delestre was the defending Verona champion but his time of 39.62 in the jump-off on Chesall Zimequest was nearly two seconds slower than Said's.

"Abdel was almost invincible today," said Delestre.

"I was two seconds slower, but I’ve no regrets because I’ve picked up good points towards the final."

Switzerland's Martin Fuchs, a Summer Youth Olympic Games team jumping champion at Singapore 2010, claimed the bronze medal today on board Clooney, clocking 40.62 in the jump-off.

Sweden's Douglas Lindelow was the final rider to go double-clear on Sacramento but his time of 41.89 meant he missed the podium.

In the overall Western European League standings, Switzerland's Romain Duguet still leads the way with 37 points, despite not being in action today.

Delestre is second on 31, with all competitors hoping to gain enough points to reach the overall final in Omaha in the United States in March.

Belgium's Pieter Devos sits third on 28, with the next Western European leg due to take place in German city Stuttgart on November 20.
