Kenta Matsudaira of Japan produced two stunning performances today to reach the semi-finals of the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Austrian Open at the Tips Arena in Linz.

He first eliminated compatriot Koki Niwa, the world number 15, who was the top seed in the men's tournament at the World Tour event.

Matsudaira was in emphatic form as he came from one game behind to cruise to victory over the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games champion, 6-11, 11-5, 11-5, 11-5, 11-8.

Matsudaira then went on to beat Germany's Ricardo Walther in the quarter-finals in a seven game thriller, 11-6, 11-5, 9-11, 7-11, 6-11, 11-2, 11-6 to book his place in tomorrow's semi-finals against German Benedikt Duda.

Former World Junior Table Tennis Championships winner Chen Chien-an of Chinese Taipei was also eliminated in the second shock of the day.

India’s Sharath Kamal Achanta produced a sublime performance to comfortably eliminate his opponent in straight games, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 11-7.

Achanta, however, fell short in the quarter-finals as he was downed by Duda   11-9, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-4.

The other semi-final will be contested between Brazil's Hugo Calderano and tenth seed Yuto Muramatsu of Japan, after they overcame Germany's Ruwen Filus and Lei Kou of Ukraine respectively.

Elsewhere, second seed Mima Ito of Japan is the highest ranked player left in the women's singles competition.

Ito, positioned 11 in the world, survived a hostile crowd to overcome Austria's Sofia Polcanova 11-8, 7-11, 11-4, 11-5, 11-8. 

She will now take on compatriot Honoka Hashimoto for a place in the final after she beat Romanian Elizabeta Samara 9-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-4, 11-5, 11-7.

The other semi-final will be between Japan's Yui Hamamoto, who eliminated world number eight Cheng I-ching of Chinese Taipei, and South Korea's Choi Hyojoo.

Hamamoto defeated South Korea's Suh Hyowon 12-10, 11-7, 8-11, 6-11, 13-11, 13-11 to advance while Choi overcame Thailand's Suthasini Sawettabut 11-8, 12-10, 11-6, 14-12.

Action at the Tips Arena concludes tomorrow with men’s and women’s singles semi-finals taking place in the morning before the gold medal matches complete the tournament in the afternoon.
