Top seeds China reached the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Junior Mixed Team Championships after beating England in play-off A1 at the Bilbao Arena in Spain.

Having defeated Armenia 5-0 earlier in the day in Group A1, China overcame their European counterparts 3-0 to book their place in the last eight.

England started the day with a 3-2 victory over Australia to secure first place in Group A2, but they fell short in the decider and will now contest the final stage for ninth to 16th place.

Next up for China is a meeting tomorrow with last year’s third-place finishers Chinese Taipei, who beat Russia 4-1 to win Group B2 and then defeated Poland 3-1 in play-off B1.

Poland, who ensured top spot in Group B1 thanks to a 4-1 victory over Romania, go on to face England.
