Summer Youth Olympic Games gold medallist Shi Yuqi of China secured the men’s singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) French Open with a hard-fought straight games victory over South Korea’s Lee Hyun-il at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris.

The Chinese player overcame his South Korean opponent 21-16, 21-19 to ensure he took full advantage of the absence of the top seeds in the latter stages of this Superseries tournament by lifting the French Open crown.

The unseeded 20-year-old also earned vital points on the road to the BWF’s season-ending finale in Dubai in December.

Earlier on the final day of the competition in the French capital, a candidate city for the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, China's He Bingjiao topped the podium in the women’s singles tournament with a comprehensive win against American Beiwen Zhang.

He, who also won gold at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics in Nanjing and has two World Junior Championships crowns to her name, dominated the final on her way to wrapping up a 21-9, 21-9 triumph.

It proved to be a successful day for the Chinese contingent as they also won the women’s doubles and mixed doubles tournaments.

The seventh-seeded duo of Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen sprung a surprise in the final of the mixed doubles event as they defeated top seeds Ko Sung-hyun and Kim Ha Na of South Korea.

The Chinese pair needed a little over half an hour to clinch a 21-16, 21-15 victory to condemn the South Koreans to a shock defeat.

Chen was the star performer on the last day of the French Open as she had already partnered Jia Yifan to the women’s doubles title as they beat South Korean sixth seeds Chang Ye-na and Lee So Hee 21-16, 21-17.

Second seeds Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark were locked in a fierce battle with Thai pair Bodin Isara and Nipitphon Phuangphua before Isara was forced to withdraw due to injury in the men's doubles.

The Danes had recovered from dropping the opening game and led 19-21, 21-18, 3-0 when Isara could not continue.

The next Superseries event is due to be the China Open in Fuzhou between November 15 and 20.
