Patrick Chan secured the sixth Skate Canada International title of his career by holding off the challenge of Japan’s Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu in the men’s event at the Hershey’s Centre in Toronto.

The Canadian headed into the second day of competition, which forms part of the International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating season, with an advantage following his performance in the short programme but expected to come under pressure in the free skate.

A fall on a quad Salchow dented Chan’s hopes of earning the overall victory but he collected a level four for his spins and step sequence to end with a season best 176.39 points.

The tally saw the three-time world champion end the competition with a total of 266.95 points, which saw him narrowly hold off the Sochi 2014 Olympic gold medallist.

Hanyu, ratified as the first skater to achieve a quad loop in an ISU competition in September, crucially missed out on achieving the feat again to end the free skate with 183.41 points.

While proving enough to top the standings in the discipline, he finished second overall on 263.06 points.

Canada’s Kevin Reynolds scored 245.06 points across the two programmes to win the bronze medal.

The ladies’ gold medal was earned by Evgenia Medvedeva, after the reigning world and European champion achieved 144.41 points in the free skate.

It gave the Russian a final total of 220.65 points, with Canada’s Kaetlyn Osmond and Satoko Miyahara of Japan completing the podium with 206.45 and 192.08 respectively.

There was further Canadian success in the pairs and ice dance competitions, leaving the host nation with three of the four titles on offer.

Meagan Duhamel and Eric Radford completed the successful defence of their pairs title by ending the competition with a total of 218.30 points.

China’s Xiaoyu Yu and Hao Zhang marked their first ISU Grand Prix event together by winning the silver medal with 202.08 points, while 190.22 was enough for Canada’s Liubov Iliushechkina and Dylan Moscovitch to claim bronze.

The final Canadian gold came from Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, with the duo posting a score of 189.06 points to top the podium in the ice dance events.

Madison Chock and Evan Bates ended narrowly adrift as the Americans ended on 188.24 points, despite winning the free dance.

Canada’s Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier won the bronze medal with 182.57 points.
