Sergiu Toma of the United Arab Emirates returned to judo action following his heroics at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro to claim the men's under 81 kilogram title on home soil at the International Judo Federation (IJF) Grand Slam at the IPIC Arena in Abu Dhabi.

This summer, Toma became only the second medallist at an Olympic Games from the UAE and first in judo when he claimed silver in the men's under 81kg category at Rio 2016.

Competing for the first time since then, Toma broke new records today as he secured his country's first IJF Grand Slam gold medal.

The 29-year-old defeated Brazilian Victor Penalber in the final by inflicting a waza-ari to which the home fans erupted.

Montenegro's Srdjan Mrvaljevic claimed the first bronze medal after he defeated Ivan Vorobev of Russia and the second went to Frank De Wit of The Netherlands, who continues to emerge as one of the top prospects in this new Olympic cycle.

The 20-year-old, one of the leading hopes at his country's new centralised national training centre, defeated 19-year-old Kazakh Didar Khamza.

Zagreb Grand Prix silver medallist Tommy Macias of Sweden overcame world number one and Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan to claim the men's under 73kg gold.

The 23-year-old was forced to come from a yuko down to defeat his opponent with the help of a single waza-ari score.

Russia's Musa Mogushkov beat Fagan Guluzada of Azerbaijan to win the first bronze medal in this category.

The UAE's Victor Scvortov added further delight for the home crowd as he beat Sam Van T Westende of The Netherlands to take the second bronze medal.

There was also action in two women's categories today.

Junior European champion Marie Eve Gahie became the youngest French woman to win a Grand Slam gold medal as the teenager defeated Brazil's Maria Portela in the final of the under 70kg category.

Gahie, who turns 20 next month, benefited from her opponent receiving a penalty in the four minute gold medal contest, for a negative posture, as both judoka failed to produce a score in what was a close contest.

The first bronze medal was claimed by Great Britain's Katie-Jemima Yeats-Brown as she beat 18-year-old Grand Slam debutant Giovanna Scoccimarro of Germany.

Yeats-Brown, who is coached by Barcelona 1992 Olympic bronze and Sydney 2000 Olympic silver medallist Kate Howey, scored a waza-ari with 45 seconds left to win the contest.

Brazil's Barbara Timo defeated Sweden's Anna Bernholm to win the second.

The first bronze medal was won by Mariana Silva of Brazil as she defeated Croatia's Marijana Miskovic Hasanbegovic.

the second was claimed by Beijing 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Ketleyn Quadros, another Brazilian, after she scored a yuko to defeat Margaux Pinot of France, who failed to threaten the scoreboard during the contest.

Action is scheduled to take place tomorrow in the women's under and over 78kg events and men's under 90kg and under and over 100kg tournaments.
