Chinese divers proved a class above the rest of the field as they earned all four gold medals on offer on the first day of finals at the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Diving Grand Prix in Gold Coast.

Mexican-born Kevin Chavez carried home hopes in the men’s three metre springboard event at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, the proposed venue for diving and swimming at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Chavez had impressed in qualifying yesterday but found himself trailing Jianfeng Peng after the Chinese diver produced a strong series of dives.

Peng topped podium by scoring 490.90 points, with the naturalised Australian Chavez finishing some way adrift on 423.85 to win silver.

He had been pushed close for the runner-up spot by Jordan Windle, but the American diver had to settle for the bronze medal having accrued 419.40 points.

The women’s 10m platform final was dominated by China, their divers claiming the old and bronze medals.

Jie Lian ended as the clear winner of the competition after scoring 346.55 points, while United States’ Tarrin Gilliland secured the silver medal on 299.20.

China’s Bingqing Xia prevented another Australian podium finish, ending the competition on 282.25 points, while the home favourite Brittany O’Brien scored 278.25 to finish fourth.

Xia also claimed the gold medal in the women’s synchronised event with Yujie Xia after they earned 278.73 points.

American pair Delaney Schnell and Tarrin Gilliland finished second with 258.84 points, while Loh Zhiayi and Kimberly Bong Qian Ping of Malaysia scored 195.06 to win the bronze medal.

Bowen Huang and Siyi Xie claimed the final gold medal of the day after the Chinese duo finished well clear of their rivals in the men’s synchronised springboard event by scoring 409.92 points.

Singapore’s Mark and Timothy Lee were the runners-up on 342.09, while 331.17 points was enough for Malaysia’s Ool Tze Liang and Chew Yiwei to win the bronze medal.

Tomorrow is due to see the finals of the men's 10m synchronised platform, the women's 3m synchronised springboard, the women's 3m springboard and the men's 10m platform.
