Asian Paralympic Committee (APC) President Majid Rashed has praised the performances of athletes from the continent at Rio 2016 and vowed to build on the "incredible legacy" to "spur our nations on to success".

Rashed claimed the APC was "excited" about the next three Paralympics, all due to take place in Asia - Pyeongchang 2018, Tokyo 2020 and Beijing 2022.

The APC chief singled out China for their "exemplary" results during last month’s event in the Brazilian city after they topped the medal table with 239 medals, of which 107 were gold.

But he also praised the overall display from Asian competitors.

A total of 823 athletes from 39 Asian countries participated at Rio 2016.

There were a number of notable performances, with Malaysia claiming their first-ever Paralympic gold medal thanks to Mohamad Ridzuan Mohamad Puzi in the men's 100 metres T36.

On the same night of athletics at the Olympic Stadium, shot put F20 competitor Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli then delivered the second gold for Malaysia.

Qatar also made history with their maiden Paralympic medals as Sara Hamdi Masoud and Abdulqadir Abdulrahman Abdulrahman took silver in the women’s shot put F33 and men’s shot put F34 respectively.

Iranian powerlifter Siamand Rahman proved to be one of the stars of the event as he lifted a world record 310 kilograms in the over 100kg event on his way to the gold medal.

The Games, however, were marred by the death of Iran’s Bahman Golbarnezhad on the final day of sporting action.

Golbarnezhad, 48, died after crashing during the C4-5 cycling road race in Pontal, a small peninsula and beach area in the Recreio dos Bandeirantes neighborhood, located in the West Zone of the city.

He suffered a cardiac arrest on the way to hospital after incurring a head injury following a collision with a rock while descending midway through the race.

"There have been many stand out performances that have enthralled not just the crowds here in Rio but also back in the athletes’ home countries where people have followed the Games with awe and pride in their team," Rashed said.

"The Paralympic Games have once again shown the world that nothing is impossible and remind us of what the human spirit is capable of.

"However at these Games we have also tragically had a reminder about our vulnerability with the passing of Iran’s Bahman Golbarnezhad.

"We know how deeply our colleagues in the NPC of the Islamic Republic of Iran feel his loss and we share in their grief and pain.

"We owe Rio and Brazil a huge debt of gratitude for the way that they have risen to deliver these Games, the first on the South American continent, under challenging circumstances.

"But deliver they have.

"And the Paralympic Movement has been further strengthened by this wonderful, joyful celebration of the human spirit.

"In Asia, we look forward to our turn to build on this incredible legacy.

"We will use these Games to spur our nations onto greater success in 2018, 2020 and 2022."
